Why "The Calcutta-That-Was Journal"?

I am a Calcutta enthusiast, and this blog is an extension of the passion I have for this beautiful city. Born and brought up in Calcutta, this city is as much a part of me as it is of any other Calcuttan.

Calcutta for me was initially this city where I just happen to live, with its distraught political scenario, crumbling houses, congested roads and teeming population. But thanks to a book by the famous Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay "Those Days" I discovered what a treasure-house my city actually is.

Calcutta's rich history and heritage is unmatched. It has been a home to some of the most illustrious personalities that ever lived. The literary brilliance of the Nobel Laureate Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore, the cinematic excellence of Satyajit Ray, the courageous and selfless charity done by Mother Teresa among others, has left an indomitable mark in our cultural and social landscape.

The reason behind this blog is to trace the history of Calcutta, as I discover the various nuances of its glorious past.

I intend to start this venture from where it all started. I will be re-reading "Those Days" and noting down anything and everything that appeals to me as a reader. I will also maintain in chronological order all the major (and minor) historical incidents that I shall come across on the way.

Thus begins the journey of "The Calcutta-That-Was Journal". Wish me luck!
